Representative Kelly Meigs Recognized for Perfect Attendance
Topeka – Representative Kelly Meigs (R-Shawnee/Lenexa) has been recognized for perfect attendance during the 2011 legislative session. Official records of the Kansas House of Representatives show that Representative Meigs attended every day of the legislative session and cast all but one of the 306 votes cast by the full House.

“Although the Kansas legislative session is only a portion of the year, it requires a tremendous time commitment from the representatives in order to make the concept of a citizen legislature really work,” said Speaker Mike O’Neal (R-Hutchinson). “Representative Meigs takes her duty as a legislator very seriously. As a mother of four, she has many demands for her time. Her commitment and dedication to her constituents is clearly evident in the time she spends serving them in Topeka.”

Meigs is serving her first term in the Kansas House. She represents the 17th District which includes Shawnee and Lenexa in Johnson County.

The House Clerk records, and recently confirmed, the official attendance and voting records of the Kansas House of Representatives.

A Welcome Note from Kelly Meigs...

Dear 17th District,

Welcome to my site! Like many of you, I am concerned about the state of our economy and what the future holds for our children. It seems that while most of us are concerned with job security and paying the bills, our elected officials are busy doing politics as usual. I can remember sitting in front of my television one night listening to how our leaders had passed the federal “stimulus bill” and felt very disillusioned about the course that our country was taking. Over the past few years we have seen an upward trend in the government’s intrusion into our lives not to mention out of control spending and the lack of common sense approaches to tackling the issues.

Like many of you, I have been working hard to raise my family and felt I was too busy to get involved in the political process. Yet as time passed and I continued to witness the government get bigger and show a greater disdain for the desires of the American people, I said enough is enough. I decided it was time to get out of my comfort zone, stand up for our principles, freedoms and liberties that we all hold so dear and stand with my friends and neighbors, many who are getting involved for the very first time.

My initial involvement started by attending a Tea Party at Johnson County Community College back in April of 2009. I was amazed to learn how many people shared the same beliefs and values that I did. Since that time, my husband and I decided to take action and get involved – not only with issues at the federal level, but the state and local level as well.

As I began to watch issues at the state level, it soon became clear to me that some of the same issues that plagued our government at the national level like fiscal responsibility, limited and efficient government and accountability, plagued our government at the state level as well. As Kansans, we can do better than this. We need to encourage consumers and businesses to do business in Kansas not discourage it. This includes a return to free market principles and lowering the tax burden.

Thomas Jefferson once said, “All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent.” I am no longer silent. I want to leave a lasting legacy for my own children. I want them to have the same quality of life and optimistic outlook on the future that I did. I want to instill the same patriotism in them that my parents instilled in me.

I want to bring common sense and family values back to Kansas!

Sincerely,

Kelly Meigs
State Rep., District 17
